Are You Really Present, or Just Performing? A Look at Entrepreneurial Guilt and Fulfillment
I recently came across a post on social media that said:
“Are you present at home or just physically there and mentally working? I struggle with this too.”

And I get it. I really do. It’s a real question. But what’s more interesting to me than the question itself is why posts like this keep popping up—especially from entrepreneurs.
There’s a pattern I’ve noticed:
When an entrepreneur is feeling unmotivated or lazy, they often post about hustle. They go into “grind mode” online, praising long hours, late nights, and sacrifice. But then, once they’ve been in that mode for a while, they start posting the opposite: content about being “mentally absent,” about burnout, about being there but not really there.
What’s happening here isn’t just reflection. It’s a pendulum swing. It’s performative.
It’s what happens when someone doesn’t know how to be still with where they are.
But here’s the truth—working hard isn’t the problem. Resting isn’t the problem.
The real issue is when we try to villainize one mode of living to justify another. One week, people act like working long hours is evil and ruining families. The next, they act like anyone who doesn’t work 14-hour days lacks discipline and drive.
Neither is true.
You can be a present, loving, grounded person and still work your ass off.
You can work less and still be massively fulfilled.
You can hustle or rest or do both in cycles. The point isn’t which one you do. The point is: Does it fulfill you?
If your family’s happy, your relationships are strong, and you feel good when you wake up—then you’re winning. Whether you’re grinding, coasting, or sipping piña coladas by the pool.
We need to stop pretending there’s one righteous path and start realizing that fulfillment is the only metric that matters.
Not hustle.
Not laziness.
Not even presence—if presence means guilt-driven performance for social approval.

So here’s a better question
Are you fulfilled?
And if you are—why are you trying to fix what’s not broken?
