They Knew You Before You Walked In the Room

Why Marketing Isn’t a Luxury—It’s a Shortcut to Trust
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard business owners say,

“Marketing doesn’t work for us.”

“We’re already busy.”

“We’ve got a sales team.”

“We rely on word of mouth.”

Cool. But let me ask you something:

How much is it worth to you to close the sale faster?

Seriously—think about it. How long does it take your average client to go from a first handshake at a networking event or referral lunch to actually hiring you? Weeks? Months? A year?

Now imagine this: what if they were already halfway sold before you ever met?
What if they already knew who you were?
What if they had already decided they trusted you before you even said your first sentence?

That’s the power of marketing.

Not gimmicks. Not noise. Real, strategic placement—video, social, television, streaming, design, and digital presence.
And it doesn’t just generate new leads (which it does).
It pre-sells the leads you’re already chasing. It warms up the referrals you’re already meeting.
It compresses the sales cycle from weeks down to minutes.

Let me use Bahlr as an example.

Let’s say I stop doing all advertising. No videos. No digital. No placement. I just show up to every event, every meeting, every conversation. I go 100% face-to-face.

That means I’m shouldering the entire burden of warming people up—one by one.
That takes time.
It costs energy.
It requires a sales crew, constant follow-up, scheduling, lead qualification, and trying to earn trust in real time.
Meanwhile, I still have a full plate of client work to deliver on.
But flip it.

Let’s say I do run consistent digital campaigns. I place video ads on streaming platforms and television. I invest in social content, design, and brand clarity. I show up on feeds, in inboxes, on screens, and on streets.

Now I walk into that same event…
And someone says,

“I’ve seen your videos.”
“You’re the guy from that ad.”
“Aren’t you the one who does those bold brand shoots?”

The sale is already halfway done.
Trust is already built.
All because the groundwork has been laid before the conversation starts.

That’s what good marketing does.
It works while you’re asleep.
It works while you’re working.
It even works while someone is scrolling from the bathroom.

If you think you don’t need it, that’s fine.
But I’d challenge you to ask yourself:
What’s it costing you to go the long way every time?
And how much would it be worth to cut that time in half—or better?

Even a small investment in strategic digital presence will change the temperature of every room you walk into.

Because people aren’t just buying your service—they’re buying your story, your presence, your trust.

And that trust is built long before they shake your hand.
